We are issuing this advisory to warn the general public of The Bahamas that there is an increase of fake website domains that are soliciting donations for relief funds with reference to Hurricane Melissa and the impact that it has had in Jamaica. These fraudulent websites target and trick victims into making donations to fake charities and organisations. This has a negative impact on the victims of Hurricane Melissa and hampers Hurricane Melissa relief exercises.

If you have visited or made any donations using a fraudulent or malicious website you may have exposed your credit card/debit card to malicious threat actors. This can lead to compromised bank accounts and/or credit card information. |

Only make donations to official and authentic charities/organisations. If you have visited any of the following websites and made a donation, it is strongly recommended that you contact your financial institution and cancel any payment that has been made. Ensure that you follow up with your financial institution to confirm that your financial information has not been compromised.

To confirm that you financial information has not been compromised, you should contact your financial institution and/or your credit card and verify that no unauthorised access has occurred. |

- Avoid using any of the previously mentioned websites to make donations to the relief fund for victims of Hurricane Melissa.
- Before making donations online via any website, confirm the authenticity of the website. You may use tools such as lookup.icann.org to confirm that a website is legitimate.
- Research any charity or organisation before you make a donation and verify that it is legitimate. Authentic charities are normally registered with a National authority. There should also be a point of contact provided.
- Verify that the website has HTTPS enabled.
- Only make payment using PayPal or Credit Card. These two services typically provide some level of fraud protection features; do not use direct bank transfers, cryptocurrency or gift cards to make payments. Ensure that the payment gateway and provider is legitimate (Stripe, PayPal, Square) and that the URL matches the provider.
- Inspect the website for misspelled words, poor grammar and other inconsistencies that typically indicate fraudulent websites.
