Child Protection Month: Building Safe Digital Spaces for Our Children
As The Bahamas observes Child Protection Month, it is an important time to reflect on our shared responsibility to safeguard the well-being of our children not only in the physical world, but in the digital one as well.
Today’s children are growing up in a highly connected environment where the internet plays a central role in how they learn, communicate, and explore. While this digital world offers incredible opportunities, it also introduces evolving risks that require awareness, coordination, and action at every level of society.
Why Child Online Protection Matters
Children are among the most active users of the internet, often engaging with online platforms from an early age.
With this increased access comes exposure to risks such as:
- Cyberbullying and online harassment
- Exposure to harmful or inappropriate content
- Online grooming and exploitation
- Misinformation and manipulation
These risks are not just technical they can have real and lasting impacts on a child’s emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.
Understanding Today’s Digital Reality
Children today are digital natives. Their curiosity, creativity, and willingness to connect are strengths but they can also make them vulnerable.
It is important to recognise:
- Not all risks lead to immediate harm, but they can create pathways to it
- Online threats can escalate quickly
- Digital actions can leave lasting footprints
A National Commitment to Protect Our Children
The Bahamas continues to take proactive steps through its Child Online Protection Strategy (COPS), a national framework designed to protect and empower children in the digital space.
This strategy focuses on:
- Strengthening legal and policy frameworks
- Promoting digital safety education
- Enhancing reporting and response systems
- Building strong national and international partnerships
Child protection is a shared responsibility across government, private sector, educators, parents, and communities.
CIRT-BS Focus: Child Online Protection

- Supporting incident response and coordination
- Delivering national awareness campaigns
- Providing guidance to parents, educators, and organisations
- Strengthening partnerships locally and internationally
If you believe a child may be at risk online, report it to the appropriate authorities. Early reporting can prevent further harm.
Recognising Signs a Child May Be at Risk
While many children use the internet safely, certain behaviours may indicate exposure to risk:
Behavioural Changes
- Withdrawal from family or usual activities
- Increased secrecy around devices
- Mood swings or distress after being online
Digital Activity Red Flags
- Excessive late-night usage
- Quickly hiding screens when approached
- Contact with unknown individuals
Social and Emotional Indicators
- Anxiety, fear, or reluctance to attend school
- Signs of cyberbullying
- Exposure to inappropriate content
These signs may not always indicate harm but they are important signals to start a conversation.
